The Avon Maitland District School Board’s Eighth Annual Multimedia Festival opened April 26th, 2006 at Avon Public School in Stratford. The Festival consists of three one-day events hosted at various schools in Huron and Perth Counties. The second day was May 10th, hosted by Elma Township Public school, and the final session was May 17th, at Exeter Public School.

Each year elementary students in grades 4 - 8 from across the district are invited to participate. Students were introduced to computer programs such as Macromedia Dreamweaver, a webpage design software, Macromedia Flash, an animation software, Smart Ideas, a concept mapping software, Microsoft Movie Maker, a program which combines graphics or photos, sound files, short movies and allows editing to create longer movies, and the multimedia authoring tools Corel Presentations and HyperStudio. The overall program is designed to assist students in learning to develop unique and interesting presentations on topics relevant in today’s curriculum.

In the morning portion of the day, participants viewed and discussed the unique creations that students had produced. In the afternoon sessions the students were separated into small groups to experience hands on techniques of the various types of software. The primary purpose of the Multimedia Festival is to offer students the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills using computer technology and encourage greater use of multimedia software in our schools.

History...

Annual HyperStudio Festival

The first annual HyperStudio Festival for students of the Avon Maitland District School Board was held at Seaforth Public School in May/1999. It was a chance for students of various ages and skill levels to gather together and share projects that they had created using HyperStudio. Door prizes were donated by Roger Wagner Publishing (now Knowledge Adventure), including mouse pads, T-shirts and full versions of HyperStudio.

The second and third festivals were held again at Seaforth Public School with close to 40 HyperKids attending. Once again the students of the Avon Maitland District School Board demonstrated great initiative and high levels of creativity. In 2001 we got bigger and better with it turning into a 2-day event. The fourth and fifth annual HyperStudio Festivals were hosted by Brussells Public and Arthur Meighen. Our sixth year festivals were hosted by the public schools of Usborne and Milverton, with over 50 students attending the 2 days.

Multimedia Festival

In 2005 we changed to reflect the changes in our school environment. From these roots, our 7th and 8th Festivals emerged. Instead of featuring just HyperStudio, students created multimedia presentations using Corel Presentations, Kid Pix, and Corel Presentations. This year, we expanded to 3 schools sites
